New Art Exhibit – Alyssa Klash

Detroit Shipping Company is pleased to present a solo show of work by painter and illustrator Alyssa Klash. Heavily influenced by her upbringing in what Klash describes as a "Pagan household," her artwork in this series takes the form of a tarot card deck. The digital illustrations reveal mystical, creature-like archetypes that beckon insight and reflection into their representation. Klash's characters are mournful and elegant; whimsical and fiery. Utilizing vibrant color and playful line work, Klash honors the meditative quality of tarot while unabashedly exhibiting her own fantasy world.

Klash was raised amid stories of folklore, witches, and mythology. She recalls family gatherings around the Ouija board and cautionary tales of witches and their magic. Klash also taps into her roots in fashion; drawing on her education at Parsons School of Design and experience working with fashion designer Betsey Johnson. By combining the mystical elements of her childhood with fashion illustration, Alyssa's series brings the Major Arcana into the context of her identity today. Klash describes focusing on one card at a time; analyzing how each card of the Arcana applies to her personal strengths and weaknesses.

"This Tarot deck has been a long time in the making. Each card represents a moment in my life that I had to overcome, and I could only do so through the knowledge and wisdom of the cards. Creating this deck has truly been a transformative process not just in my own well being but also in developing my artistic abilities. I've learned to let go, appreciating who I was in the past and love the person I am becoming."
